DESCRIPTION:Jon Nordmeyer\, MLRC School Network Director will be holding his workshop\,” Translanguaging: Multilingualism as a Superpower\,” at the Festival of Education\, hosted by St Andrew’s Episcopal School in Potomac\, MD. \nJon’s workshop dives more into independent and international schools that are fortunate to include students from many language backgrounds\, and translanguaging is one way to build on multilingualism as an asset. Translanguaging is both the complex and fluid language practices of multilingual\, as well as the pedagogical approaches that leverage those practices (Garcia & Lin\, 2016). Whether translanguaging is a new concept or familiar idea\, many educators have important questions or doubts about how it might apply to their classrooms and schools. Teachers ask: “How do I support translanguaging if I’m not bilingual?” Leaders wonder\, “How might parents respond if we introduce translanguaging at our school?” In this hands-on workshop\, you will engage with current research about translanguaging practices and pedagogies\, while considering practical application to diverse classroom contexts. You will engage with current debates about translanguaging and leave with resources to guide next steps at the classroom and school level.

Using a modified social justice policy implementation framework\, her analysis revealed themes related to principals’ depth of understanding regarding their staff and community\, how their school policies address or neglect the needs of multilingual learners\, and the extent to which school leaders’ beliefs and perceptions inform practical decision making. This talk will elucidate how the principals’ understanding of the needs and characteristics of a school community informs their policy and program decisions.

Historicizing Language Rights and Racial Integration for Transformative Education” \nThis talk will explore two landmark Supreme Court cases: Lau v. Nichols (1974) and Brown v. Board of Education (1954). Dr. Morita-Mullaney will examine how these cases intersected and sometimes conflicted in their approaches to racial and linguistic equity in education. DESCRIPTION:Xuan Zhou presents Urban STEM Teachers’ Social-Emotional Competencies and Teaching Efficacy in Post-Pandemic Workplace on January 9th\, 2025. This study investigated science\, technology\, engineering\, and mathematics teachers’ social-emotional competencies\, professional development in social-emotional learning\, and teaching self-efficacy in urban secondary schools serving many English learners. Findings revealed significant gaps in teaching self-efficacy and social-emotional competencies following the pandemic\, with limited engagement in professional development focused on social-emotional learning. \nRegister here.\n \nThis study examined the status of STEM teachers’ Social-Emotional Competencies (SEC)\, PD engagement in social-emotional learning (SEL)\, and level of teaching self-efficacy (TSE) in urban secondary public schools that serve students with a large proportion of English learners. Results show that there are significant gaps between the current and optimal status of urban STEM teachers’ TSE and SEC during the post-pandemic workplace. Moreover\, this study found urban STEM teachers lacked PD engagement in SEL during the post-pandemic\, and their PD engagement in SEL was identified as having significant impacts on the promotion of STEM teachers’ TSE via their SEC. \n

Registration required.  \nThis webinar provides a praxis-oriented follow-up to the October talk on core practices for teaching multilingual students. We have found that teacher educators often welcome opportunities to hear about the details of one other’s pedagogical decision-making\, but rarely get to gather these insights. In this webinar\, we discuss how we are using the core practices research and materials in our own teaching. We describe the pedagogical work the core practices entail and how approaching methods courses in this way has changed our teaching with different kinds of teacher populations. We also share empirical\, theoretical\, and pedagogical considerations and next steps in this work.

DESCRIPTION:Megan Madigan Peercy\, Johanna Tigert\, Daisy Fredricks\, & Melanie Hardy-Skeberdis present Leveraging Core Practices to Support Teachers’ Humanizing Pedagogy with MLLs. Registration required. \nIn this webinar\, we share an overview of the six core practices for teaching multilingual students that we have developed in collaboration with early career teachers. These practices emerged in response to the gap that Faltis & Valdes (2016) identified regarding the lack of direction offered to teacher educators about “the kinds of knowledge\, skills\, and inclinations teachers need to develop in order to be good and effective teachers and advocates for students who are speaking a language other than English” (p. 549). We highlight the core practices\, share classroom examples\, discuss how they support teachers’ humanizing pedagogy with MLLs\, offer resources for teacher and teacher educator development\, and describe our current and future efforts to further this research.

This presentation shares evidence from a randomized controlled trial on the Tier 1 content literacy intervention known as the Model of Reading Engagement (MORE). It highlights the effectiveness of MORE’s integrated approach in improving reading and writing outcomes for multilingual learners and their English-proficient peers. \nPlease register in advance.
