MLRC Speaker Series Featuring Dr. Lee Her

December 3 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

On December 3rd, 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM US Central Time, Dr. Lee Her presents “Hmong Heritage Language Maintenance: Perspectives and Experiences From Students, Families, and Educators.” Register here.

This talk will focus on Hmong heritage language maintenance efforts through different stakeholder perspectives and experiences. Specifically, Dr. Her will present findings from two studies that examine (a) the partnership between Hmong American families and Hmong and English dual language programs, and (b) Hmong language teachers’ emotional rollercoaster working with Hmong heritage language students. Both studies highlight the need for a multilayered approach to language preservation. The talk concludes with implications for practitioners and researchers interested in helping less commonly taught language communities in the U.S. maintain and sustain their languages.
