Dual Language Bilingual Educaion

Dual Language Bilingual Education refers to bilingual education programs that purposefully aim to support minoritized language students’ academic, sociocultural, and language and literacy development through two (or more) languages over time.

DLBE Researcher Convocation 2023

In November 2023, as part of the annual La Cosecha Conference, bilingual researchers met to discuss and develop an action agenda that addresses current gaps in Dual Language Bilingual Education research through a multilingual stance. The multilingual stance is enacted through the content (e.g., research topics) and through the research design and methodologies necessary to conduct the kind of research the field of Dual Language Bilingual Education needs.

The 2023 DLBE Researcher Convocation highlighted the need for a research action agenda to guide DLBE research, a space to disseminate the work related to the agenda, and opportunities to collaborate toward advancing the agenda.

The purpose of this site to create a space for research, dissemination and collaboration.

DLBE Research Action Agenda

The purpose of the DLBE Research Action Agenda is to build a community that engages in research issues most important to strengthening and expanding quality Dual Language Bilingual Education. The agenda was framed through four principles fundamental to DLBE research:

Principle 1. Engage in research with an equity lens

Principle 2. Recognize and affirm the complexities and diversity within DLBE

Principle 3. Center the experiences and voices of minoritized language speakers

Principle 4.  Approach DLBE through affirmative practices

The DLBE Research Action Agenda, while not exhaustive, is organized into three areas:

  1. Bilingual educator talent development
  2. Program practices that support program outcomes
  3. Impact of policies on program success
